DEFINITIONS

MASSAGE THERAPY  A hands-on manipulation of the soft tissue of the body which may reduce stress, give temporary relief to muscular tension or pain, provide a sense of well-being, and promote relaxation. 

  • SWEDISH MASSAGE  A smooth, flowing massage that is personalized from light to very firm but gentle pressure.

  • DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE  Utilizes slow strokes and direct pressure across the grain of the muscles with the fingers, thumbs or elbows, gradually working into the deeper muscles and connective tissue.

  • SPORTS MASSAGE  The express application of massage techniques, such as stretching, utilized to achieve a specific goal when treating an athlete.  It is especially beneficial pre- or post-event.

PRENATAL MASSAGE  All the benefits of  massage therapy plus extra cushioning and special support that moms-to-be require at different stages of pregnancy.

COUPLE'S MASSAGE  Two people are massaged by two massage therapists in one room together at the same time.

COUPLE'S MASSAGE CLASS  The couple receives individualized hands-on instruction to teach them how to give and receive a relaxing massage, using basic techniques and proper body positioning.

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY (CST)  A gentle, noninvasive, hands-on technique that uses a light touch to release tension around your body’s connective tissue network called the fascia. CST promotes pain relief from headaches, neck pain and the side effects of cancer treatment.

​

BAREFOOT/ASHIATSU MASSAGE  A full body deep pressure massage where the therapist uses their feet as the main tool. Like traditional massage, it is done on a table with the proper draping. The therapist uses overhead bars and a long strap to maintain balance throughout the session.

HOT STONE MASSAGE  Smooth, heated stones are used as an extension of the massage therapist's own hands, or by placing them on the body. The heat can be both deeply relaxing and help warm up tight muscles so the therapist can work more deeply.  

​

AROMATHERAPY  Essential oils are extracted from herbs, flowers and fruits and added to a diffuser or massage lotion/oil to naturally enhance well-being.

​

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE  A hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into myofascial connective tissue restrictions to help alleviate muscular shortness and tightness. 

​

REFLEXOLOGY  The application of pressure to the feet and/or hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques. 

​

CUPPING THERAPY  An ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist places special cups on the skin for a few minutes to create suction. It may help with pain, inflammation, relaxation and well-being.  

​

REIKI  A healing technique ("laying on hands") based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the client by means of touch to facilitate the natural healing processes of the client's body and restore physical and emotional well-being.
